The Sangheili, or known by the humans as Elites, are a species of the Covenant that serve as the Prophets protectors. They fight with honor and lead soldiers into battle. They were currently replaced by the Brutes and allied with the Humans.
Halo: Combat Evolved Description: There are a few varieties of the Elite, but all are roughly 8' 6" tall and incredibly strong. Their strength allows them to rely on brute force when necessary, but they're quite capable of brilliant battlefield tactics as well. Their natural resilience is augmented with full-body energy shielding which recharges when depleted. They wield plasma pistols, plasma rifles, grenades and needlers.
Halo 2 Description: Elites are the core of the Covenant military. Excellent soldiers, brilliant tacticians, and disciplined, aggressive fighters, they are the primary strength of the Covenant force. Faster, stronger, and tougher than Humans, they fight in relatively small numbers but often lead squads of Grunts. Armor color seems to indicate rank, and we believe Elites are promoted based on numbers of casualties they inflict.
Halo 3 Description: Formerly the ruling military class of the Covenant, Elites are proud fighters with a valiant history. Their recent split from the Covenant was sparked by religious differences, but the schism runs deeper than that. Elites now ally with their former Human foes in part because of a deep-seated resentment of Prophet rule and in part because they understand the scale of the Flood threat.
Halo Wars Description: Elites are a unit in Halo Wars, but only in campaign. They wield Needlers and come in pairs, similar to the Brutes. They also appear in Grunt units, and Elite Honor Guard units. The two previous mentioned ones appear in Skirmish. Elites also drive vehicles, like the Ghost.

Halo 3: ODST Description: Elites don't appear alive in Halo 3: ODST, but dead bodies can be found on the streets of New Mombassa, since they were killed by Brutes.
Halo Reach Description: The leadership in any given group. In most cases, neutralizing Elites will cause the rest of the unit to lose cohesion.
