Skirmishers are a strain of the Kig-Yar species, used as shock-troops. They have only appeared in the series 9 mystery packs and in the 2012 Spade VS. Skirmisher set carrying their favored weapon, the Needle Rifle. During Halo: Reach, several variants of Skirmishers are found.

- Skirmishers are the first of the Covenant species that you encounter in Halo: Reach, it is seen leaping from a roof top and can be killed. It is worth noting that this Skirmisher is not meant to be seen by the player, and is also much smaller than any other Skirmisher in the game.
- Skirmishers never appear in the other Halo games aside from Halo: Reach. This is explained by the fact the Covenant lost large amounts of troops on Reach and the Skirmisher subspecies was driven to near extinction.
